Hunger: It’s About Sustainability
As today marks World Hunger Day, The Sreepur Village strongly believes that poverty should not separate children from their mothers and, as the only charity in Bangladesh to keep them together, it focuses heavily on ways to sustain an end to poverty.
Hunger is not just about food, it is also linked to education, healthcare, nutrition, work opportunities and the environment, and this is why The Sreepur Village proactively equips over 150 impoverished mothers and more than 450 vulnerable children with the skills that will see them and their families safe, and secure for the future.
With millions of people in Bangladesh facing food insecurity, our focus on nutrition is of utmost importance. Through this programme we teach our mothers from the ground up, we hold regular agricultural classes which, combined with literacy, focus on growing vegetables in rice sacks.
Environment plays a key role in poverty and considering the impact the climate has on rural areas in Bangladesh, growing your own vegetables in sacks, that can be easily transported, is instrumental in sustaining food for a family of four.
In tackling poverty and malnutrition, we also provide a nutritionist, health classes and training in rearing animals and rainbow gardens, the latter of which indicates the nutrients and vitamins of each colour of a fruit or vegetable.
Empowering women so that they can independently provide their families with a roof over their heads, food, an education and healthcare, and teaching them to become advocates of their successes is a positive route to sustaining the end of poverty.
