World Breast Feeding Week (Aug 1-7)
To mark the end of World Breast Feeding Week, we would like to share with you how important Breast Feeding, Health and Nutrition is in The Sreepur Village, Bangladesh.
In 2018, the World Health Organisation (WHO) and United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) issued a new 10 point guidance to further raise awareness on the benefits of early breastfeeding. According to research, breastfeeding babies for the first two years would annually save the lives of more than 8,20,000 children under the age five.
While exclusive breastfeeding reduces the risk of diarrhoea, pneumonia and other infectious diseases, we must not take for granted that everyone can breastfeed.
Currently, in our Baby House there are a total of 35 children between the ages of 0-2 years, all of which are being breast fed except for one. Shaha, aged 2 years 2 months, was never able to have her mothers breast milk and when she arrived at The Sreepur Village, aged six months, she was severely malnourished.
Shaha was provided with suji (cows milk cereal) and Khichuri, a regular food of the baby house. Shaha is being well cared for by the village's clinical department and her health, nutrition and general well being is monitored at all times.
In The Sreepur Village, our mothers and children's health and well-being, along with safety and providing educational and vocational opportunities for a better future, is of utmost importance to us.
Breastfeeding and producing breast milk requires energy and to build and keep up a healthy milk supply, we provide our mothers with well-balanced meals and healthy snacks. In fact, nutrition, is something that we focus heavily on as we really want our mothers to learn about the benefits of eating healthily and how to feed their families, keeping them fit and healthy at all times.
With the Big Give coming up this winter, we are currently looking for pledgers which will help us raise vital funds towards our project “Sustainable Nutritional Advocates” https://bit.ly/2uf1XOn.
