Mother Earth Day
As it is Mother Earth Day today we thought we would share with you some of our wonderful bamboo products that our mothers are producing here, in The Sreepur Village, Bangladesh.
Approximately 60 percent of the population, in Bangladesh, is living in rural areas and, in general, these people are the producers and consumers of bamboo weaving and craft products. Bamboo is light, easy to handle and process and, whilst tools can come in handy, in the majority of cases it is the independent use of hand-skills, such as weaving, that really add shape to the final product and this is all work that can easily be done by our mothers.
There is a real demand for bamboo products like bamboo benches, mats, baskets, as well as craft items all of which are sold in the local markets. This is an excellent opportunity for our mothers to get more involved in the production and a chance to increase their income. So, based on the local market analysis, (mothers’ community), The Sreepur Village has, for a year, been offering the mothers training in making and marketing bamboo weaving and craft products.
The trainee mothers not only learn how to make the products but they are also taught marketing techniques as well as money management. When the mothers leave The Sreepur Village, which is normally after 3 years, they are then able to earn a livelihood in their community, independently and with utmost confidence.
