Flooding in Bangladesh
The recent flooding in Bangladesh has submerged more than a third of the low-lying area of the country, affecting over 7.5 million inhabitants and killing at least 147 people. Although the overall flood situation in most affected areas has improved, as the flood water comes down the situation is actually becoming worse. In this current state, the flood-hit people are passing their days in misery as most of the farmers have lost their crops, cattle, and fish farms. The majority of the victims, in the northern region, are suffering due to scarcity of food, drinking water and fuel oil, as the government’s relief is too insufficient to meet their growing needs.
A significant number of beneficiaries of The Sreepur Village are from the northern region of Bangladesh and we have a large number of ex-beneficiaries living in this area, who have also been directly affected. Many of our current mothers are extremely concerned about their relatives, who dwell in these flood-reached areas. In 2014, The Sreepur Village decided to introduce an outreach project in Kurigram, a village in northern Bangladesh frequently affected by these devastating floods. Our Kurigram Project officer, Kabir, has been endeavouring to look into the circumstances of some of our ex-mothers in this region. So far, he has discovered that around 80 mothers have lost almost everything, which includes their homes, belongings, crops and cattle.

বাংলাদেশে সাম্প্রতিক বন্যায় অন্তত ১৪৭ জন মানুষের মৃত্যু এবং ৭.৫ মিলিয়ন মানুষ ক্ষতিগ্রস্ত হয়েছে। দেশের উত্তরাঞ্চলে বন্যার্তরা ব্যাপক খাদ্য ও বিশুদ্ধ পানির তীব্র সংকটের মুখোমুখি হচ্ছেন। যদিও বন্যাগ্রস্ত এলাকায় বন্যা পরিস্থিতির সাময়িক উন্নতি হয়েছে তবে বন্যার পানি নামতে শুরু করায় সামগ্রিক পরিস্থিতি আরও ভয়াবহ রূপ নিয়েছে। বেশীরভাগ মানুষ দীর্ঘদিনের এই বন্যায় তাদের ফসল ও গবাদি পশু হারিয়ে নিঃস্ব হয়েছেন। এদিকে পর্যাপ্ত সরকারী ত্রাণের অভাবে বন্যার্তরা খাদ্য, পানীয় জল এবং জ্বালানি তেলের তীব্র সংকটে ভুগছেন।
শিশু পল্লী প্লাসের উল্লেখযোগ্য সংখ্যক সুবিধাভোগী মা’ বাংলাদেশের উত্তরাঞ্চলের নদীবিধৌত এলাকা থেকে আসেন। এসব বন্যাগ্রস্ত এলাকায় আমাদের একটা বড় সংখ্যক প্রাক্তন সুবিধাভোগী মা বসবাস করছেন। এছাড়াও আমাদের প্রজেক্টে থাকা বর্তমান মা’দের অনেকের পরিবার বন্যার্ত। সম্প্রতি আমাদের কুড়িগ্রাম প্রকল্প কর্মকর্তারা আমাদের প্রাক্তন মা’দের সার্বিক পরিস্থিতি দেখতে তাদের এলাকায় যান। তারা ৮০ জন মাকে শনাক্ত করেন যারা বন্যার্ত এবং তাঁরা তাদের ঘরবাড়ি, জিনিসপত্র, ফসল, গবাদি পশু, হাঁস-মুরগি সব কিছু হারিয়ে নিঃস্ব হয়ে গেছেন। সর্বোপরি, এই ক্ষয়ক্ষতি মারাত্মক খাদ্য সংকট সৃষ্টি করবে বলে আশংকা প্রকাশ করছেন সংশ্লিষ্টরা।
